Asphyx, Torment Of Souls, Spectral, le 9 mars 2013 à Trèves (Exhaus).

Ce soir à Trèves, c’est une légende du DeathMetal qui prend possession des lieux. Asphyx, parrain du Death/DoomMetalold-school, fait la promotion de son nouvel et génialissime album « Deathhammer », album monumental qui m’a mis claque incroyable et qui est l’un mes albums préférés de 2012.Venu exclusivement pour Asphyx que je n’ai jamais vu, je ne connais pas du tout les deux autres groupes.
Le cadre se prête particulièrement bien à la musique jouée ce soir. C’est dans les sous-sols du complexe de l’Exhaus que se déroule la soirée : une cave voutée et allongée, faite de briques noircies qui installe une ambiance sinistre où l’on imagine bien un culte secret et démoniaque y officier. C’est donc dans ce cadre qu’environ 300 à 400 métalleux ont répondu présents ce soir.

En guise de chauffeur de salle, les locaux de Spectral sont très efficaces. Leur Pagan Black mélodique teinté de Thrash n’est pas des plus original, mais leur set de 45 minutes est délivré avec conviction et énergie. De bons riffs Pagan/Black et de bons leads de guitare, servis par un son correcte, rendent leur musique très agréable à écouter. En revanche, on peut remarquer, à l’exception du chanteur, un manque flagrant de charisme de la part des membres du groupe, le guitariste et la bassiste étant raides comme des statues et les yeux rivés au sol. Autre point négatif, imputable au technicien du son, le clavier est tout simplement inaudible et ne sert strictement à rien. Hormis cela, on passe un bon moment en compagnie de Spectral.
Viens ensuite Torment Of Souls. Je n’assiste malheureusement qu’aux deux derniers morceaux du groupe allemand, car je vais voir les membres d’Asphyx pour une rencontre inoubliable avec Martin van Drunen. Néanmoins, le groupe délivre un bon show (45 min), leur DeathMetalold-school, écrasant et puissant trouve écho auprès des nombreux spectateurs.

Mais le héros de la soirée s’appelle Asphyx. Le groupe monte tranquillement sur scène et déjà Martin communique avec le public. La sono diffuse la glauque intro de « The Rack » et l’on sait ce qui va suivre. La troupe batave nous balance en effet d’entrée de jeu « Vermin », un de leurs classiques et c’est la furie. Le son est dévastateur, puissant et cru et le groupe est en forme. Puis vient « The Flood », premier extrait mortel de « Deathammer ».

Alwin Zuur et surtout Paul Bayeens headbanguent comme si leur vie en dépendait. Bob Bagchus, stoïque et concentré sur son jeu, nous assomme avec sa frappe éléphantesque. Martin van Drunen, lui s’arrache les cordes vocales comme jamais, sa voix de cougar est toujours aussi jouissive à entendre et c’est un vrai bonheur que de le voir enfin sur scène. Il n’hésite d’ailleurs pas à parler longuement avec le public (en allemand, que je ne comprends pas étant français) et fait même une petite dédicace aux quelques fans français présents, ce qui me fait super plaisir. « Ms Bismarck » et « Death The Brutal Way » sont ensuite interprétées, brutales à souhait : l’intro sur les toms de cette dernière me casse littéralement la nuque.

Un fan un peu trop remuant heurte le micro durant l’intro de « Death The Brutal Way» et du coup, Martin foire son growl. Ça continue avec le titre über-doom qu’est « Der Landser », chanté en allemand, et dont le break détruit tout sur son passage. Un des grands moments du set. La chanson « Deathhammer » suit et le public scande avec Martin « This is true DeathMetal you Bastards ! ». Le groupe est vraiment content d’être là ce soir. Paul headbangue tellement sur « Deathhammer » qu’il manque de précision et rate ses riffs mais cela colle parfaitement au côté cru, sale, et authentique de la musique d’Asphyx. « WeDoom You To Death » et « Eisenbahnmörser » arrivent et on a l’impression qu’un régiment de tanks s’écrase sur nous. Je ne m’attendais pas à ce morceau mais c’est une bonne surprise. Mes cervicales s’en souviennent. Les speeds « Wasteland Of Terror » et « Reign Of The Brute » sont enchainés, c’est l’apocalypse dans la salle. La fosse est ravie. Les leads fantomatiques d’ « Asphyx (ForgottenWar) » résonnent et le public exulte. Ce classique est accueilli comme un hymne.

Le groupe quitte la scène en remerciant le public et revient quelques minutes plus tard pour LE moment du show. Sont alors joués les terrifiants « The Rack » et « Last One On Earth » en rappel : Asphyx est ovationné par les fans allemands et c’est amplement mérité. Cette prestation est vraiment mémorable. Au bout d’ 1h15 de show, le groupe est crevé, ils ont donné tout ce qu’ils avaient mais les fans réclament d’autres morceaux. Non prévu sur la setlist, « Scorbutics », l’un de mes morceaux préférés, aux paroles superbement écrites, est donc joué en second rappel. La voix de Martin n’a absolument pas souffert durant ces 80 minutes de brutalité pure. Le show est terminé, j’ai donc assisté à un putain de concert de ces vétérans du Death.

Merci à Asphyx, à leur passion pour la musique et à leur gentillesse et leur simplicité. Je rentre chez moi en quittant le Paradis (ou était-ce l’Enfer ?).

This night, in Trier, nothing but a Death Metal legend is setting up the city. Asphyx, the Dutch godfathers of old-school Death Metal, are presenting their new and terrific full-length album “Deathhammer”, a stunning effort which simply blew me away. Surely one the best, if not the best Death Metal record of 2012 and one my favourites. I exclusively came to see Asphyx whom I’ve never seen before. I don’t even know the other bands booked tonight.

The settings lend themselves perfectly for the occasion. Located in the basements of the old Exhaus building, the venue is consisting of a long and vaulted cave made of dirty blackened red bricks. It renders a sinister and dispiriting atmosphere which could easily fit for an obscure demonic cult.

So, about 300 to 400 metalheads attend this place for a deadly night.

As an opening act, local German band Spectral is a good appetizer. Playing a Melodic Pagan/Black Metal style with some Thrash influences, their music isn’t very original but their 45-minutes performance sounds really good and is rather well delivered. Some good Pagan/Black riffs and guitar leads make the music enjoyable. On the other hand, we can notice, apart from the singer, that this band bitterly lacks some charisma: the guitarist and bassist are apathetic, gazing down to their shoes. Another negative aspect of the show, solely due to the sound-engineer, is the fact that the keyboards are just inaudible and are completely worthless. Despite this, we have some good times with Spectral.

Next support is another Teutonic band, the death metallers of Torment Of Souls which I unfortunately fail to see as a whole as I am meeting and greeting Asphyx members, especially with Martin van Drunen in a moment worthy to remember. Nevertheless, the band plays well (45min). Their heavy and powerful music is very well-received by numerous fans.

Last but not least, Asphyx is now there. The band is quietly getting on stage and Martin is already talking to the audience. The PA is spewing out “The Rack” ’s gloomy intro and we all know what will come next. And so, sure enough, the Dutch band is first playing “Vermin”, one of their classic songs, and now the war is beginning. The sound is crushing, powerful, loud and raw and the members are in good shape. Then comes a first deadly excerpt of “Deathhammer” named “The Flood”.

Alwin Zuur and more-over Paul Baayens are headbanging like devils. Bob Bagchus, stoic and deeply focused on his playing, is hammering his drumkit like a (magma) mammoth, mashing our eardrums. Martin van Drunen is hurting his vocal chords without any compassion; his cougar-like voice is orgasmic as usual. I just go into raptures as I hear it and it is a real pleasure to see him performing in live conditions. He doesn’t hesitate to communicate for long times with the audience (in German, which I cannot understand as I am French) even during songs, and dedicate some words to the few French fans present here tonight, and so he makes me very happy. Then “MS Bismarck” and “Death The Brutal Way” are interpreted. The songs are heavy and brutal as fuck. The introduction of the latter one evoked, is a neck-breaking song and my neck is still suffering.

A pretty excited fan pushes over Martin’s mic and so he fails to do some of his growls. It goes on with the ultra-heavy song called “Der Landser”, a fantastic heavy song with a stunning middle section and sung in German. This is one of the highlights of the show. Then comes “Deathhammer” and the audience sings along with Martin the famous line “This is true Death Metal you Bastards!”. The group is really happy to be here tonight. Paul headbangs so much during “Deathhammer” that he lacks precision and fails to reproduce some riffs, but it fits really well with Asphyx’s metal, adding some rawness, dirtiness and authenticity to their sound. Hey, these are live conditions! “We Doom You To Death” and “Eisenbahnmörser” follow and it feels like an army of tanks is grinding us down. These massive, killer songs are simply amazing. I didn’t expect the latter one to be played but it is a good surprise. My neck still remembers this moment. Fast songs like “Wasteland Of Terror” and “Reign Of The Brute” are then played and the pit looks like a scene from the apocalypse. The public is overwhelmed. Ghostly lead guitars are announcing “Asphyx (Forgotten War)” and the audience is exulting. This classic Death Metal song is received like an anthem.

The band gets off stage, thanks the crowd and comes back a few minutes later for something I should call the climax of this night. The most terrifying songs of Asphyx are interpreted as encores: “The Rack” and “Last One On Earth”. Asphyx is hailed by his German fans and this is fucking deserved. This show was monumental. After a 75 min-long set, the musicians are exhausted, they gave everything they had but the fans still claim more songs. Unmentioned on the setlist, “Scorbutics”, one of my favourite tracks, with amazing lyrics, is played a second encore. All along this 80 minutes show of pure brutality, Martin’s voice was at its best and didn’t suffer. The concert is now over. What a great, mind-blowing show !
